I mentioned yesterday, that there have been few constants on this journey; every day is a new town, new scenery, new opportunities, and more often than not, a new group of people (at least on the last Italian stretch). Firstly, this makes the constants in the pilgrimage more special – the people who you do spend longer walking with, for example. But it also provides a contrast, that almost defines the whole experience.
There’s no better way to appreciate a night in a castle, than by following up with a night in the loos at a campsite; or misery marching in the rain, followed by a sense of achievement, relief and some fantastic French food and wine; or a difficult 4 am get-up, and a glorious sunrise later on. The route has been full of contrast – lows that are never so low that you can’t laugh about them afterwards, and some truly stunning highs.
Distance to Rome: 27.1 miles
